This I Believe

Accomplishing Big Things in Small Pieces

William Wissemann - Hastings on Hudson, New York

As heard on NPR’s Weekend Edition, September 14, 2008

1. The author, William Wissemann, believes that you can better accomplish big things in small pieces.
2.He wrote about having dyslexia and about how he had to leave public school in the fourth grade , because he was having trouble processing things in class. Therefore, he decided to slow things down things and he practiced learning how to use a Rubik's Cube little by little in four weeks. In the end, he mastered the Rubik's Cube and can do anywhere from a 3x3 to 5x5 Rubik's cube in little time.

3. My personal reaction to this essay is that it made sense and that it is inspiring because he overcame a problem he faced by slowing things down and not only learned how to master the Rubik's Cube but used this new skill to master other things. I expected based on the title for this to be about taking your time to learn something.

The True Value of Life

Sudie Bond Noland - Portland, Oregon

As heard on The Bob Edwards Show, December 9, 2011

1. The author, Sudie Noland, believes in the power of forgiveness and compassion.
2. She was riding with her friend’s family in their car  when they were  by a drunk driver named, Edy Jo, going sixty-five miles per hour. All of them survived but Sudie left the accident with a new life full of chronic back and neck pain, bad headaches, and a part of her kidney missing. Edy was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison and sent her sorrowful letters of regret and she forgave him.
3.This essay made sense and made me feel respect for Sudie and also made influenced me and inspired me to forgive others, based upon the fact she was able to forgive someone who hurt her psychically and emotionally. Based upon the title I expected a story about forgiveness which was the theme and a life threatening situation to be in the story, which was.

Scrapbook Proposal

My plan for Scout's Scrapbook is that I will use construction paper, scrapbook paper, stickers,pop-up stickers, markers, printer ink and anything that I can use to make my project creative and eye-catching. I will also try my uttermost best to make the paper sound like Scout from a first person point of view. It will take me approximately 2 days to complete this process. The most challenging part of the project would be making the project come together in an informative and appealing way.

Miss Caroline Fisher - I chose to use Miss Caroline Fisher because...
*She is not mentioned as much in the book and I wanted to do someone challenging.
*She is highly disliked by Scout and I wanted to use Scout's emotion of dislike towards Miss   Caroline to make the journal entry interesting.
Aunt Alexandra- I chose to use Aunt Alexandra because...
*She is despised by Scout and I wanted to bring that emotion in the journal entry.
*I wanted to show how she and Scout don't have a good relationship.
Atticus- I chose to use Atticus because...........
*He is of great importance to not only this book but Scout's life
* I wanted to show how Scout looks up to him.

Themes

"Most of our values and attitudes develop during childhood." I agree with this statement for many reasons.  It is either you have a good, hearty and strong foundation as a child or you have a weak, unkept one that lacks structural support. To me this mostly applies to manners and education. Have you ever had someone ask you or someone you know if they have home training? Well this is where the attitudes and values come in. If your parents teach you to no talk unless spoken to when conversing with an adult ,to  listen to and obey people who are older than, treat others the way you want to be treated, other things like that I believe it is easier for you to gain the concept. The reason being you are still developing and learning about the world around you. It is similar to teaching a kid basketball, it takes time to learn and perfect something, but if you start something like basketball at a young age it gives time to understand and comprehend the sport so when it comes time actually use your skill you have already mastered it. Also this  applies to me through personal experiences. I have been raised in a family that has high expectations and have only been to private schools and charters schools where the curriculum is very challenging. I am now used to an academically challenging environment and it is what helps me focus and get my work done right. Now if I were to go to a less challenging school then my foundation would crumble because I am so used to an academically challenging environment because that is how I was raised. The attitudes and values that we develop during childhood pretty much determine our future and who we are.
